Rehman Qadir is an architect and architectural historian trained at the National College of Arts, Lahore (2021) and The Bartlett, UCL (2023). His interests include histories of global south asia and the experience of modernity expressed through architecture. He recently joined The Townscape Consultancy in London as a Junior Heritage and Townscape Consultant.

From at least the early 19th century, South Asian ayahs (nurses and ladies’ maids) were hired to accompany British families on ocean journeys between India and Britain. The essay focuses on the travelling ayahs and the racist attitudes experienced by them, especially on board seafaring vessels.
